By Helen Hegener with Jon Van Zyle, Frank Flavin and Sandra Medearis; Northern Lights Media, 2023; 232 pages; $39.95.

“Hope 91 International Intercontinental Sled Dog Race, a most improbable, impossible attempt at sled dog diplomacy between the superpowers took off from Nome on April 6, 1991,” Sandra Medearis writes in a recent book commemorating the event. “About 200 believers and skeptics out of a town population of 4,200 lined the chute to see eight stalwart mushers off to the Soviet Far East.”

Eat Your Words from Edible Alaska #68: Where the river meets the road…
April 7, 2024

Hey there,

Here’s a small taste of one of the pieces in Watershed, our current Spring issue of the magazine:
Each spring as the snow begins to shrink, I drive out the Copper River Highway in search of edible greens. The first young fireweed shoots and fiddleheads emerge during the growing daylight of late April and May. All along the road edges, I see these olivine gems spring up where the wild beautiful chaos of the wilderness meets the flat gravel. Over the summer, I will drive this stretch many times—to campfires with friends, and fishing holes, and hikes. This year, as I traversed this familiar stretch of easy foraging ground, I couldn’t help but think of the paradox of this road—both barrier and bastion for wild foods and those who rely on them.

Allgood News 4-3-24 – Flash Mob Cancer – Simply the Best.
Arliss and Edward LeBere finally found each other late in life … and after being married less than two years, they got the worst news. Edward has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma. The average glioblastoma survival time is 12-18 months – only 25% of patients survive more than one year, and only 5% of patients survive more than five years.
Arliss says they don’t have a lot of money, but she wanted to let her husband know how much she loves him on their wedding anniversary (February 22) and sent out a call on social media to see if any local dance organizations could help her put together a FLASH MOB to their favorite song – The Best – by Tina Turner. Bartlett High School in Anchorage took up the challenge and surprised Edward at the Dimond Mall with the ‘their’ song … and dance. I shot the entire moment and I talked to the couple afterwards. What’s it like knowing… when you’re going to die? How is life right now.
